The Courses
NYS Parks names the three nines the Red, Green and Blue courses and dates them to 1962 and 1964 (its pages differ on which nine came first). All three were designed by Alfred H. Tull, the architect who also designed the Yellow and redesigned the Blue at Bethpage. Tull laid out his holes before he looked at a topographic map, and the agency says the result makes the most of the land: a somewhat hilly, variable layout through mature woodland. The driving range looks out over Long Island Sound.
NYS Parks is open about who the course is for. Within the region's state courses, Sunken Meadow is meant for golfers of moderate skill. It is well kept but not maintained to championship level, offering a pleasant round with moderate challenges that does not punish a wayward shot.
